Advising for Sociology Majors

Frankly, there’s a lot to think about in sociology. The “old” sociology was America-centric, the “new” sociology is global – either way the field grapples with the defining issues of our time.

Advising Appointments
We look forward to working with you during your studies and strongly recommend that you meet with an advisor at least once per semester. 

  • For Fall 2025, current majors and minors in Sociology and Anthropology should email chssadv@gmu.edu to request an advising appointment.
  • To declare a major or minor in Sociology or any programs affiliated with the Sociology and Anthropology Department, please also email chssadv@gmu.edu. 

In addition to assisting with course selection, your Sociology and Anthropology advisors are available to discuss your overall degree progress, educational and career goals, which may include:

  • Running a degree audit in Patriot Web
  • Developing a graduation plan

Educational goals

  • Declaring a minor or double major
  • Studying abroad
  • Pursuing honors in the major
