Sociology

Mason’s sociology degree is designed to help you understand the social forces that shape your world and who you are. 

You will learn how social movements emerge from the collective efforts of individuals. You will study the role that social forces play in defining racial identities and gender roles. You will come to realize how social inequality may shape your life and the lives of others. You will learn to see many interactions with a global perspective.

What Can I Do with a Sociology Degree?

Training in sociology is excellent preparation for graduate school, whether in the law, social sciences, or education. It also prepares students for entry-level positions in many areas, including:

  • Business--human resource management, training, advertising, marketing and consumer research, insurance, real estate, personnel work, or sales
  • Community work--organizing, researching, communicating, or fund raising on behalf of social service organizations, nonprofits, and organizations serving immigrants, human rights groups, community development agencies, and environmental groups
  • Corrections--probation, parole, or other criminal justice work
  • College settings--admissions, alumni relations, student life, or placement offices
  • Government services--federal, state, or local government work in such areas as transportation, housing, human services, and labor
  • Health services--family planning, substance abuse, rehabilitation, or disability services
  • Publishing, journalism, and public relations--writing, editing, or research
  • Social Services--rehabilitation, case management, or group work with youth, special populations, or the elderly
  • Teaching--elementary and secondary education (in conjunction with appropriate teacher certification)
