MA in Sociology
Heather Sinda, 2024

Describe your dissertation, thesis, or capstone.
I investigated the militarization process of spouses of United States Military Officers and found growing populations resistant to the process of militarization, intentionally distancing themselves from the identity and community of the military spouse. This is related to their feelings about agency. Whether they feel they have agency and whether they feel they have a right to agency strongly impacts military spouses’ level of resistance.
How did you choose your specific area of study?
I became interested in military culture first while working as a civilian for the military, then observing military functions as a spouse and while actively serving myself. I felt sociology would help me answer the questions I had formed about leadership and the unique community developed within the total institution of the military.
How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?
My time with Mason broadened my understanding, not only of sociology but of the world and of humanity. My curiosity has only grown, along with a desire to ensure equitable and inclusive structures for my fellow human beings.
Which accomplishments during your time at Mason are you most proud of?
My thesis, by far, has been my greatest academic achievement, and one I learned from the most in my time at Mason.
Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career?
Professor Blake Silver and Professor Ben Manski both ensured my goals were attainable throughout the process of losing and grieving my first son and then the pregnancy and delivery of my second. Additionally, both provided insight and guidance as I identified a research topic and proposal for my thesis. Professor Elizangela Storelli worked tirelessly to coordinate classes I required remotely to properly navigate my health and the needs of my family and ensure the completion and delivery of my thesis.
What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?
I plan to take some time off to explore the option of writing a book while raising my third child, then seek out employment as a government civilian or non-profit coordinator to assist military families and veterans.
