Survey Statistician, US Census Bureau

My sociology degree gave me a great combination of research and quantitative skills, as well as boosting my critical thinking skills that I've carried with me throughout my professional career. Namely, I was able to apply these skills in a social survey context at the US Census Bureau, which was my first job after graduating, by researching industry standards for data collection, help design survey questions, analyze demographic trends, and communicate complex ideas both written and verbally. Having a solid foundation of core sociological and statistical concepts allowed me to not only handle everyday tasks as a survey statistician, but also gave me the tools to consider the big picture as to how my work created a positive impact for society.
