In this seminar Dr. Roy Nyberg explores the idea of ‘smartness’ (e.g. ‘smart city’, ‘smart house’, ‘smart grid’) that has recently become a trendy prefix to many of our basic elements of life. A variety of meanings have been assigned to ‘smartness’ in scholarly writing, but most commonly it is linked to the use of information and communication technologies. By drawing on his recent papers Dr. Nyberg will discuss the extent to which ‘smartness’ is about actual change. The empirical evidence of the talk comes mostly from recent research on smart city development in Japan, and the theoretical context is organisational sociology.
