SOAN Colloquium: The Futurity of Fukushima Future

Dr. Satsuki Takahashi will be presenting her current project on futurism in post-Fukushima Japan. In this paper, she examines post-3/11 Japan’s amplified preoccupation with future-making by placing it in historical context. Through looking at an ongoing pilot project—an floating wind farm off the infamous Fukushima coast—and especially at the first windmill completed in 2014, named “Fukushima Future,” she will also compare Japanese public's enthusiastic about the dawn of new renewable energy and local fishers' ambivalence toward this proposed futurity.
