At the age of twelve, Oslo-born scholar Johan Galtung saw his own father arrested by the Nazis in German-occupied Norway and had become a peace scholar and mediator by the age of twenty-one. He is known as a founder of the field of peace studies and is in demand for lectures and mediation in conflicts around the world. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from nine universities and the Right Livelihood Award, sometimes referred to as the Alternative Nobel Peace Prize. His talk is titled "Middle East Revolts: Two Human Rights Conventions, Two Declining Empires, What Else?"
