"Arts-Based Praxis as Culturally Sound Care to Reduce Suicide Risk"  

Mary Holiman, Howard University 

Mary Holiman is a 2nd-year PhD student in the Department of Communication, Culture, and Media Studies (CCMS) on the heath communication track.  She holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in psychology and criminiology from the birthplace of Black college football, Johnson C. Smith University, and a Master of Public Health in community health science and practice from New York University.  A self-proclaimed "arts-in-health enthusiast" and social justice advocate, Mary has done a variety of professional and volunteer-based work for wellness centers, afterschool programs, and nonprofit organizations, including a child welfare magazine, as well as held leadership roles as a member ofthe Nathional Council of Negro Women and Ignite NC.  Additionally, she is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Interested in Black feminism, African traditional religions, and storytelling, Mary aspires to incorporate more art-based and culturally competent practices into healthcare and education.  Mary rejects the idea that academia and scholarly thought can't or shuldn't be "fun" and inaccessible, and hopes that comes through in her work.

Aditi Brown, Brown University

Aditi Brown is a PhD candidate at Brown University in teh Department of Sociology.  Currently on professional leave, she is working as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University.
