Jessica Marie Shotwell, born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland. Using a critical Black feminist sociological lens, Jessica’s dissertation research rethinks the logic of coping processes as they occur in US public education. Jessica also studies health disparities as a mechanism of difference on racial lines, interrogating the structural conditions and systemic issues that shape health outcomes.
