The Contentious Politics of Transitional Justice in Post-Genocide Guatemala

Jo-Marie Burt is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), which is a renowned organization focused on human rights research and advocacy. Dr. Burt’s research specifically centers on post-conflict societies, studying topics such as political violence, human rights, and transitional justice. She has authored numerous books and scholarly articles, including her latest work "Transitional Justice in the Aftermath of Civil Conflict: Lessons from Peru, Guatemala and El Salvador." In addition to academic research, Dr. Burt has also actively participated in practical research initiatives, including trial monitoring projects in Peru and Guatemala. In this session, Dr. Burt will delve into her research methodologies, discuss how she incorporates advocacy work, and share insights from her Guatemala case study on the politics of truth, justice, and memory in post-conflict nations.
