The second edition of the Global South Graduate Student Conference is being organized by the Global South Research Hub housed within the Center for Social Science Research at George Mason University on May 4 and May 5, 2023.

This year's conference would feature a keynote address by Dr. Alf Gunvald Nilsen on the topic "Authoritarian Populism in the Southern Interregnum". The rise of authoritarian regimes across the world has arguably become a key defining moment within the history of our increasingly interconnected world. While these political dynamics have profound effects on all nations and communities across the world, they have particularly impactful changes to the social landscape within the global south context. It becomes even more important now then ever before to clearly understand these socio-political dynamics as we march towards a more challenging future.

About the Keynote Speaker

Dr. Nilsen is a scholar of social movements, political economy, state formation and global development. He is currently Professor at the Department of Sociology and the Director of the Centre for Asian Studies in Africa at the University of Pretoria. He is the author of Adivasis and the State: Subalternity and Citizenship in India's Bhil Heartland (Cambridge University Press, 2018).
