David Rovics on "The Culture of Protest"
Making Movement Music from the 1990s to the 2020s
Monday, May 1, 2023 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM EDT
Horizon Hall, #6325
Described as a "freaking genius" on MTV, the "new Phil Ochs" on BBC, the "musical version of Democracy Now" by Amy Goodman, and often praised by the likes of Tom Morello, Pete Seeger, and Steve Wozniak, David Rovics has embodied, learned from, and done much to carry forward the singing traditions of political protest and the social movement of the global North.
In his first visit to George Mason University, Rovics will share his observations on the relationship between recent changes in the music and media industries and the culture of political protest in the countries where he regularly performs. He will also talk about his work in organizing and working with other musicians and artists, including his Musical History and Songmap tools - both of which are wonderful resources for social movement scholars and teachers.
