Panel 1 - 5:00 PM to 5:50 PM

Mikaela Smith Headshot

Mikaela Smith is a research scientist for the Ohio Policy Evaluation Network, based at The Ohio State University. Smith received her BA in math from Mount Holyoke College and her MA and PhD in sociology from the University of California, Irvine. She completed a post-doc with OPEN prior to becoming a research scientist. Within OPEN, Smith conducts research on  the relationships between reproductive healthcare policy, opinions, access, and use, focusing mainly on Ohio and the Midwest. For her dissertation, which fell at the intersection of political sociology and the sociology of gender, Smith conducted comparative research of public investments in reproductive healthcare in the United States. Smith enjoys the cross-disciplinary nature of this work, and the ways in which sociology can help inform epidemiological, political, and economic research.

During graduate school, Sam had the opportunity to work as both a research assistant to the Chair of the Department and also a research consultant to the Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction. Currently, Sam is working as a User Experience Researcher at Key Lime Interactive, LLC and using all of the same research methods she specialized in in graduate school everyday.

Emily Zhang, Headshot

Her BA in Sociology helps her to connect with and hold empathy for folks with lived experiences and intersecting identities different from her own. Working with Mason's diverse student population, it’s been helpful to have an understanding of social inequalities and how our institutions reproduce and reinforce them. In addition to her role at SSAC, she is also a graduate student pursuing her Masters in Counseling with plans to work as a school counselor after graduation, where she hopes to continue supporting students and their families.
