Title: The Cooing of the Dove and the Cawing of the Crow: The Poetics of Mourning and Memory in Two Elegies by Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d. 1057 CE)
This lecture will explore the poetics of mourning and memory in two contrasting elegies by the blind Late ʿAbbāsid poet Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī: one for a nearly anonymous Ḥanafī faqīh, identified only as Abū Ḥamzah; the other for al-Sharīf Abū Ṭāhir al-Musāwī, the father of the two most influential poet-scholars and political figures of Būyid Baghdād, al-Sharīf al-Raḍī and al-Sharīf al-Murtaḍā.
The lecture will be live-streamed on YouTube: https://youtu.be/YplEz1E6kqQ
