SOCI 309 - DL1: Contemp Fam Intimate Relations

No social institution has changed as rapidly and dramatically as "the family." In this course we will examine and analyze the diverse forms of contemporary families. --"traditional" family, domestic partnerships, cohabiting couples, single-parent families, stepfamilies, "child-free" families, and LGBTQ families. Among the topics we will cover are changes in sexual mores that are reflected in the shift from courtship and dating to "relation-shopping" on the internet; shifting roles of men embracing the role of nurturant parent and supportive partner to women who have moved into the workforce; the prevalence and effects of divorce on children; and domestic violence. The course also considers the ways in which class, race, and ethnicity affect family forms and examines the role of public policy in providing support to American families and families in other countries facing the challenges of juggling work and family demands.
