Section Information for Fall 2012
This course focuses on the concepts of modernity, colonialism, and nationalism as they unfolded on the South Asian subcontinent in the 19th and 20th centuries. Throughout, we will consider to what extent these processes were precursors to globalization or examples of it. Our analysis of primary texts by Rammohun Roy, Syed Ahmad Khan, Jotirao Phule, Tarabai Shinde, Rabindranath Tagore, Mohandas K. Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Mohammed Iqbal, M.A. Jinnah, Jawaharlal Nehru and others will reveal how South Asians responded to, resisted, and reformed society during the British colonial period. Secondary readings will detail how categories such as caste, language, ethnicity, gender, and religion became markers of modern political identity as well as categories of knowledge.Tags:
