ANTH 450 - 001: Ethnographic Research Methods

This course introduces students to ethnographic research methods including fieldwork, interviewing, life histories, archival research, audio-visual documentation, and other qualitative components that generate data about people, places, and cultures. On Tuesdays we will meet in person for a class lecture and discussion, a required part of the course. The "hybrid" part of the course will entail students undertaking guided "fieldwork" assignments and engaging with online content. Questions this course will pose and answer: What can ethnographic methods tell us about people’s lives and world views? What are the challenges and ethics of this kind of research? And to what extent is the researcher part of the method? This is a hands-on course where students will learn by doing and practice ethnographic methods for their own research projects they will develop and undertake over the course of the semester.

ANTH 450-001 is a hybrid section with face-to-face meetings and asynchronous online coursework.
