This course examines space, place, and mobilities, and their confluence, as social, cultural, and political processes shaped by power, governance, institutions, inequality, aspiration, and desire. From anthropology, we pay attention to dwelling, attachment, and the lived texture of place. From geography, we consider the politics of space: what shapes it, who controls it, and who is excluded from it. From mobilities research, we focus on flows, circulation, and the politics of who gets to move, and who gets stopped. Together, they give us a wider lens and sharper vocabulary for thinking about public spaces, infrastructures, borders, and other sites where social worlds are built, policed, and contested.
Our questions are theoretical and political: How do publics form, or fail to form, in shared space? How do liberal and illiberal projects materialize in roads, checkpoints, plazas, and elsewhere? What does democracy look like on the ground, and in transit? And how do aspirations, for a better life, a better place, a way out, take shape within and against material constraint?
Expect close readings of ethnography (across several regions) alongside social theory, cultural analysis, and your own emerging projects.
