SOAN Recognizes Distinguished Alumnus

Each year, George Mason University honors its alumni during September's Alumni Weekend. The 2014 weekend events took place September 19-21 on the Fairfax campus.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences makes an additional effort to honor distinguished alumni from each of its departments. This year's Sociology and Anthropology recognition goes to Thomas Vander Ven, who received his Master of Arts degree at Mason in 1993. He is now a Professor at Ohio University's sociology department, where he's earned a number of distinctions for his outstanding teaching methods and scholarship for over 10 years.

Vander Ven specializes in crime, delinquency, and deviance studies and has actively published two books and numerous articles and chapters in those areas. His dedication to scholarship and the community represents our departmental values and we are pleased to recognize his contributions to the field.
