For many college students, exam week is murder; but for a group of students taking an anthropology special topics course, the entire semester has been murder. Yet they are still coming to class. The course they are taking is titled “The Anthropology of Human Horrors: Monsters, Vampires and Sacrifice” and it is—as it states in the syllabus—the study of murder...
This semester the 40+ students enrolled in ANTH 399 have discussed human sacrifice, Charles Manson, Jonestown, “ethnic cleansing,” and Jack the Ripper, among other deadly topics, and the reaction has been, well, enthusiastic.
