Sociologists head to ASA in NYC

Sociology graduate students and faculty are excitedly heading to the American Sociological Association annual conference taking place in New York City August 10-13, 2013.

Sociology Graduate Students:

  • Marisa Allison and Randy Lynn will present "Gendered Work and Market Influences in an Educational Technology Initiative: Hardware, Peopleware, Soldiers, Divas, and Prostitutes." Marisa will also participate as a panelist in a workshop "Professional Development Workshop. Flourishing in a Liminal Zone: Career Advice for Adjuncts."
  • Anderson Bean and Melissa Gouge are participating in the "Re-Imagining Human Rights" conference within the broader ASA conference, organized by Professor John Dale.
  • Jean Boucher will present "The Science/Policy Gap: Climate Change and Concerted Political Immediacy."
  • Robert Fenton will present "The Objects of Culinary Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction."
  • Katie Kerstetter will present "Engaging Renters in Community Associations: Examining Multilevel Processes of Inequality" and will be presider for a roundtable "The Organization of Higher Education."
  • Shaun Michel will present "Nonprofit Policy Organizations in the Climate Change Debate: Ecology and Networks."
  • Erin Stephens will present "How Happiness Can Make the World Go 'Round."

Sociology Faculty:

  • Amy Best will present "Youth consumers and the fast-food market: The emotional landscape of micro-encounters, Situations as guide for action" and will be presider for a panel "Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Research Session. Issues in Youth Experiences, Community, and Education."
  • Johanna Bockman will be discussant for a panel "Non-Capitalist Globalizations: Socialist, Communist, Anarchist, Indigenous, Non-Aligned, and Beyond" and will attend Political Economy of the World System council meetings.
  • John Dale has organized a one-day conference "Re-Imagining Human Rights" within the ASA conference, sponsored by the ASA Section on Human Rights, SSSP, and several other organizations.
  • Shannon Davis will present "Satisfaction with Work-Life Balance in the Global Digital Marketplace: The Case of Russian-Language Internet Freelancers" along with our colleagues at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow -- Andrey Shevchuk and Denis Strebkov.
  • Mark Jacobs will present "The Strength of Popular Culture and the Production of a Successful Food Blog" and will be presider for roundtable "Eating, Drinking, Consuming."
  • Dae Young Kim will present "The Cultural Transnationalization of the Korean Community in the Nation's Capital."
  • Lester Kurtz will present "Creating Social Conflict: Mobilizing for a New Economic Paradigm" and "Fighting Violence."
  • James Witte will lead a departmental workshop "Departmental Management and Leadership Workshop. Standards for Promotion and Tenure in Light of New Forms of Scholarly Work."
