Excitement at this year's DCSS Annual Banquet

SOCI PhD student wins DCSS Best Paper Award

Mason sociologists had a great time at the DC Sociological Society's Annual Banquet, which, as usual, took place at the tasty Maggiano's Restaurant in Friendship Heights. PhD students -- Marisa Allison, Catherine Imperatore, Katie Kerstetter, Sara B. Moore, Perry Threlfall -- and Professors Johanna Bockman, Shannon Davis, and Jim Witte filled the tables, making Mason the biggest delegation at the event. Shannon Davis made a gloriously gracious speech introducing our prize winning student Sara B. Moore. Sara won the Irene Tauber Student PhD-Level Paper Award for her paper titled "Constructing and Contesting Alternative Knowledge: Midwivery, Gender, and the Struggle for Professional Legitimacy." Health care researcher Ronald W. Manderscheid gave a fascinating talk about the rediscovery of sociology by mental health and health care researchers and called on all sociologists to bring sociological research and the sociological imagination to political debates at all levels. Join us next year for the good food and great company!
