Jason Smith, PHD '19 to give keynote at annual Media Sociology Symposium

Jason Smith, Affiliate Research Faculty with the Center for Social Science Research and PhD alumni (2019), will be giving the Industry Keynote address at the 2026 Media Sociology Symposium on August 6.

Dr. Smith's talk is entitled "Through the funnel: Connecting seemingly disparate fields in healthcare marketing."

This year the symposium will be virtual. The annual Media Sociology Symposium is sponsored by CITAMS: the Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.

Jason A. Smith is the Lead Consultant on the National Market Research team in the Mid-Atlantic States (Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland, and Washington D.C.) for Kaiser Permanente. Within this role he is a subject matter expert in brand/marketing messaging, member/consumer experience, product development, and diversity and equity. The work and research supports organizational clients through research ideation, design, implementation, and reporting of results to support organizational goals. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from George Mason University (2019) and is an Affiliate Research Faculty with the Center for Social Science Research. Jason is the co-editor of two volumes - Race and Contention in Twenty-First Century U.S. Media (w/Bhoomi Thakore, Routledge) and Racializing Media Policy (w/Richard Craig, Emerald) - and author of the forthcoming book Race and the Limits of Deliberative Media Policy (Routledge). In service to the discipline, he is active in both the District of Columbia Sociological Society and the Society for the Study of Social Problems, serving on the Justice 21 Committee in the latter which edits the Agenda for Social Justice book series.
