Next System Studies (NSS) at Mason is looking for a part-time Communications Specialist to boost our public engagement and streamline our communications processes and routines. Next System Studies, an initiative of the Center for Social Science Research, is dedicated to community-engaged research and education into systemic design, change, and movements. NSS at Mason currently leads several exciting projects, including Democratizing NOVA, the Digital Commonwealth Project, Next System Fellows, a speaker series, alongside classes and curriculum, workshops, and more.
The Communications Specialist will report to and meet regularly with the Strategic Development Officer and the Director of Next System Studies.
Primary duties include:
- Producing and distributing a monthly e-newsletter,
- Creating and posting regular content to our web page and social media platforms,
- Maintaining mailing lists and listservs and updating as needed,
- Aid in the migration to our new website.
Time permitting, additional responsibilities include pitching media professionals and drafting original content.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills
- Affiliation with George Mason University
- Familiarity with content management systems such as WordPress
- Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Google Docs
The ideal candidate for this role will have a demonstrated ability to communicate regarding next-system thinking, topics, and initiatives. We strongly encourage those with a passion for social justice, community engagement, and system change to apply.
Compensation:
This position is for 5-10 hours per week. Compensation varies based on experience, ranging from $18-$25/hr. Training will be provided as needed.
