Two Sociology program alumni, Erika Marquina (BA Sociology 2008, currently an academic advisor in the Global Affairs program at Mason) and Jordan Wicht (BA Sociology 2017, currently a survey statistician with the U.S. Census Bureau) spoke to current Sociology students about their experiences as Mason graduates. Marquina highlighted the relevance of her training in the Sociology program in preparing her to work at the International Monetary Fund and now back at Mason. Being able to connect complicated ideas, think holistically, and see the intersections of people and institutions were skills that were immediately useful, as was the ability to be an effective communicator. Wicht noted that the experience of completing an independent project in Sociology 485 (Sociological Analysis and Practice) was an asset when applying for internships and ultimately securing his position at the U.S. Census Bureau, as it demonstrated his ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to be able to translate research to a variety of publics.
