Describe your dissertation.

My dissertation is a mixed methods multilevel examination of police fatal force encounters in the United States.

How did you choose your specific area of study?

After taking a sociology course during my undergraduate degree, I gained an appreciation for the field. I realized that I already saw the world through a sociological lens. However, it was when I first read the work of W.E.B. DuBois in my classical sociological theory course at Mason that I knew this would be the field I saw myself in long-term.

How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?

I had amazing professors who always challenged me and motivated me to sharpen my skillset. They laid the foundation for me to be able to complete my PhD. I was able to take something away from each and every class.

What accomplishment(s) during your time at Mason are you most proud of?

I am most proud of receiving the Outstanding Sociology Graduate Student Award in 2016.

Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career? Please give an example of this impact if possible.

My dissertation chair, Dr. Shannon N. Davis, made a huge difference during my career at Mason. She provided an opportunity to work with her on my first publication, as well as guided me through my MA Capstone. Completing both were momentous milestones in my career.

What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?

My biggest advice is to stay organized and to keep everything that you work on in all of your classes. Having electronic copies and a filing system is particularly helpful. This is especially important if you have comprehensive exams and a thesis/dissertation towards the end of your degree. You will thank yourself later.

What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?

I am currently a Statistician for the Bureau of the Census. I plan to continue furthering my career within my agency following graduation.
