Marisa Allison is a doctoral candidate in Public and Applied Sociology at George Mason University as well as the Research Fellow for the New Faculty Majority Foundation, a research and advocacy organization for non-tenure track faculty. Marisa currently directs NFM’s Women and Contingency Project, a joint initiative between several organizations including the Center for the Study of Academic Labor at Colorado State University attempting to bring light to the gendered nature of contingent employment in higher education. Marisa has been an adjunct instructor for over 10 years at numerous institutions in Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama. Her doctoral research investigates the ways transformations in political economy have affected institutions of higher education and women’s work within them.
Marisa has sat on two U.S. Congressional Briefing Panels discussing the working conditions of contingent faculty in U.S. colleges and universities and is the 2015 recipient of the American Sociological Association’s Robert Dentler Award for Outstanding Student Achievement in Sociological Practice and Public Sociology for her research and advocacy work on behalf of non-tenure track faculty and their students. Marisa serves on ASA’s task force on contingent faculty and is a founding member of contingent faculty interest group in the National Women’s Studies Association. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, Virginia Public Radio, NPR’s Marketplace, Science, and Feministing.
