SOCI 215-DL1: Gender and Society
(Fall 2023)

Section Information for Fall 2023

In an age of legal equality between the sexes and greater acceptance of gender diversity, how do we explain the persistence of sexual violence and gender discrimination?  How do normative ideals of femininity and masculinity affect our everyday experience of our bodies and our intimate relationships? How are these ideals circulated through the media and reproduced in social institutions, and how are they articulated in different national, cultural and religious contexts? Readings for this course will provide the platform for considering the ways in which gender structures human experience on both the micro level of individual experience and the macro level of social structure. In the first part of the course, we will question the ways in which sex and gender have been constructed as biological facts and how these categories are fundamentally linked to notions of identity and bodily comportment. In the second, we will pay particular attention to analyzing the influence of major social institutions and socialization in shaping and changing how we understand and experience gender in contemporary society. This course fulfills the Mason Core Requirement for Social and Behavioral Sciences.

SOCI 215 DL1 is an online asynchronous section.
