Section Information for Spring 2022
We live in an age marked by relentless flows of goods and services, money, and people across national borders. Tremendous advances in transportation and communication have ushered in a new era of increased contact and interdependence among diverse cultures and nations. In an interconnected world, our lives are increasingly linked with those in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America and vice-versa. How are we to assess the changes brought by what has been loosely termed as “globalization”? What is driving globalization, and what are its consequences for millions of people in the United States and elsewhere? Who benefits and loses from globalization? And how do people experience it and respond to it? In this course we examine globalization from various disciplinary approaches and perspectives. We consider several forms of globalization and its ramifications, including economic, political, and cultural. Furthermore, we pay special attention to responses to globalization in the form of environmental and social action, as well as increased migration across national borders. This course fulfills the Mason Core requirement for Global Understanding.
