Anthropologists often use "cultural glasses" as a metaphor for the way in which culture, as a learned web of meaning, frames and explains the everyday world in which people living in different cultures take for granted. This course is designed as a "laboratory" in which to introduce students at George Mason University to their own and other cultures based as understood in anthropological perspective. Through readings, classroom experiences, including discussion and activities, guest speakers, and negotiated meaning, students will reflect on their own cultural comprehensions and open their eyes to the world as they and others see it. The course is designed to provide the opportunity for students to grasp how and why culture as an anthropological concept, acts as a lens through which humans make sense of the world.
