This course explores the uses of the biological and physical sciences in archaeology, focusing specifically on dating, site discovery, prehistoric ecology, diet, and technology. We will address how to collect samples, methods of analysis, the type of facilities necessary for undertaking the research, and how to interpret results. We will focus on how data deriving from the archaeological sciences can be used to answer theoretically interesting questions about the human past. The course will consist of a mixture of lecture, student presentations, and discussion. In completing course assignments, students will have the opportunity to seek out and assess case studies relating to their own topical/regional interests. Required prerequisite for ANTH 373: completion of ANTH 120 or ANTH 135 with a minimum grade of C or XS.

Emphasizes the ways in which data deriving from the archaeological sciences can contribute to a more contextualized and theoretically sophisticated understanding of the human past. Limited to three attempts.
