Section Information for Fall 2022

This course introduces students to anthropological theories and topics on death and dead bodies so that they are equipped with conceptual tools and vocabularies to discuss and analyze death and dead bodies. This course starts with introducing key theories on examining death and dead bodies and then moves to specific topics. One key goal in this class is to teach students to see the politics of death and dead bodies in the modern era. Politics here is used in its anthropological sense--it refers to the work of power. We will explore the politics of death and dead bodies by focusing on the power of the state and of capitalism, social relationships, and modern institutions and their impacts on managing corpses, performing rituals, and regulating emotion cross culturally. This course satisfies the Mason Core Requirement for Social and Behavioral Sciences.
