Amplifying the Concept of 'Well-Being': Public and Global Dimensions

George Mason established the world's first PhD Program in Public Sociology. How does "public sociology" inflect the concept of well-being, and how does "well-being" inflect the concept of public sociology?

Tuesday, September 22, 2015 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EDT
Merten Hall, 1201

In this presentation, Dr. Jacobs will explore such dimensions of well-being as real utopias, human rights, building sustainable communities, and re-visioning the future, and consider issues of conceptualization and measurement. This discussion is a precursor to a workshop of the same name, open to the university and the public, sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being, the Provost's Center for Global Studies, and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, to be held on Nov. 13-14, 2015.

The November workshop will bring together distinguished sociologists from the U.S. and Europe (including past presidents and other officers of both the American and the European Sociological Associations), as well as a representative of the Bhutanese government, to explore these critical issues from divergent perspectives.
