Using a laptop assembled with parts manufactured in different corners of the world and being constantly connected with the Internet, we are living in the age of globalization. But what does “globalization” actually mean? When did globalization begin? What are the differences between globalization in the past and now? How does globalization intersect with other related concepts like development and modernity? In addition to theoretical works, through ethnographic literature and films on voyages, trades, food, resources, epidemics, communication, transportation, tourism, music, art, and more (!), the course aims to provide students with the ability to critically analyzing the concepts globalization, development, and modernity and their cultural essences. 

Satisfies General Education requirement for global understanding.

Examines the varieties of cultural experience. Several cultures are studied in depth; with attention to local histories, global contexts, and shifting perspectives on the practice of ethnography. Notes: May be used for credit toward the BA in sociology. Limited to three attempts.
