(Spring 2017)

07:20 PM to 10:00 PM W

Section Information for Spring 2017

Take an in-depth look at how law enforcement and the courts handle the news media, how the media approach stories on criminal justice, and how that interplay impacts the public’s view of the justice system, with a Washington Post reporter as your tour guide. We’ll hear each week from actual participants in the system – the judge in the DC snipers case, a local police chief, a county prosecutor, defense attorneys from high-profile cases, crime victims, a top police spokesman, reporters and editors from local and national news media. We’ll discuss the hottest cases – Ferguson, “Making a Murderer,” Freddie Gray and the DC snipers, to name a few – and see how each side dealt with the pressure of a worldwide spotlight. Taught by Tom Jackman, longtime Washington Post reporter and author of the “True Crime” blog.
