Prof. Dan Temple Awarded Grant from National Geographic Society

Professor Dan Temple was awarded a $13,300 grant from the National Geographic Society for a project entitled "Social identity and reproduction of communal cosmology among Late/Final Jomon period foragers: biodistance and demographic analysis of ritual tooth extraction practices on the Atsumi peninsula."

The study will use biodistance and paleodemographic methods to evaluate the reproduction of households/community structure in mortuary practices and ontology of tooth extraction in three skeletal samples of complex foragers from the Atsumi Peninsula region of Japan. The goal of the project is to broaden current knowledge of hunter-gatherer community organization and symbolism in the archaeological mortuary record.
