Dr. Karen Rosenblum of George Mason University’s Sociology and Anthropology department is the convener of the university’s Diversity Research Group.

Since its inception in 2004, members of this student-faculty-administrator group have pursued a myriad of issues relating to the meaning and structure of diversity as it is lived and experienced by students.

Most recently, the group has sponsored The Ethnography of Diversity Project, which explores the effects of student diversity in higher education, with George Mason as the research site. Research is conducted by undergraduate and graduate students, under the supervision of faculty affiliated with the project.

The project emphasizes the close study of a culture, in this case the culture of a university, from the perspective of participants. This project puts students at the center of ground-breaking research and exposes them to experiences outside of the traditional classroom.

“Students involved in the Ethnography Project have found it an exciting way to learn about pursuing research on topics that are personally engaging,” said Rosenblum.
